The story of Plain Granola:
In the South, everyone has a relative who has done something memorably in the past. These relatives usually have the name Bud, Bubba, Earl or Billy Bob. Like the time my cousin Earl killed a racoon and put it in his fridge to clean the next day. At least he thought he killed it… When Mama opened up the fridge the next morning that coon came out of there fighting mad.
The longer a story told the more details are added to it and the less anyone questions the actual event. By the time Billy Bob’s grandchildren hear this story, there may be a mess of coons coming out of that Frigidaire! Welcome “Storytelling in the South 101”.
No one tells stories of Plain Janes in each family. But each family has them. Otherwise there would be no one listening to the coon-killing, truck wrecking Billy Bobs and their adventures.
Our Plain Granola is a tribute to the strong, steady listeners in each family who laugh, nod, and never ask “Is that really how it happened?” Not out loud, at least.

The Blues Trail Story
Blues musician Nick Lowe once said, “I suppose I was waiting until I was old enough to have some sort of experience to sing about. When you’re young it’s hard to sing the blues. Nobody believes you.”
My baby done left me, my dog up and died, if I was sober I’d probably cry.
There’s a reason many blues songs contain multiple woes of life. If you live long enough, you realize that life is a trail of hard experiences. Loves are lost, trucks do break down, and dogs do die. Losing my mom to cancer has been one of the most difficult experiences in my life. And yet not all of life is hard. There are also many times of sweetness mixed in. Mama used to say, “It can always be worse.” If she had stopped long enough to write a blues song, that would have been one of the lines in her song.
If you’re going to fully live in this life, you will have this beautiful mixture of happiness and difficulties. What you do with that mixture will define your life. And when you get old enough, you too, can sing the blues from the soul.
Blues Trail Granola is a celebration of lie with its mixture of pleasant and difficult times. Packed with blueberries and chocolate chips, each bite reminds us that it takes both to make life complete.
